The logging trail is difficult to climb
nonstop when the slope's rise asserts itself.
Winter washed stones conspire between green pines,
few in number, to make their presence felt.
Naked fallen trees block the way, heavy
in form, too large to move, lying unmourned
while the forest stands in place silently -
bark brown strength against the next Blue Ridge storm.
Mountain life has moved with the interlude,
the signs in sight proclaim activity
and signal a reform of nature's mood
while the shadows line the scene abstractly.
This work of changing art has depths unknown
that become manifest in dreams postponed.
